Day 9: Wednesday, 8/25/10, Ketchican

For their 10th anniversary, Mommy and Daddy got to go on a canoe trip all by themselves. . .well, and about 30 strangers, but no one they were related to.

Ketchican has such. . .lush wildlife. Just ask the giant snails. . .

We took a bus to Lake Harriet Hunt, about 16 miles outside of Ketchican. Harriet Hunt was a photographer/pioneer in Ketchican at the turn of the last century, and took a lot of images of the indigenous flora and fauna of the area.

Our guide was demonstrating how when a new tree grows over a fallen tree, the roots develop over the trunk, leaving a large cave-like space once the old tree has decomposed. They make great hidey-holes for various mammals, both of the two- and four-legged varieties.

We canoed most of the way around the lake, stopped for a short nature "hike", had some hot cocoa, then canoed the rest of the way around.

There were many of us in each canoe, so the actual paddling was easy. The weather was perfect, and the scenery serene.

The porta-johns, however, were just mediocre.
