I do not recall.

Everyone has their pet deflection response to questions they don't want to answer.

Until recently, Paul's was a whimpered "I'm tired." Now it's "I'm not feeling very well."

Mind your own bee's wax

Paul is playing a game on my SmartPhone. It is a game where a voice says the name of a letter and he has to press that letter in the word on the screen. It is a game he's played many times, and he knows all his letters. He is sitting right next to me while I'm responding to e-mail, and I hear the game indicate that he is getting the letters wrong.

S: Paul, why aren't you listening to the letters your're supposed to touch?
(I go to show him. He stops me)
P: Daddy, you look at your computer, and I'll look at mine.

I don't get it.

P: Knock, knock!
M: Who's there?
P: Banana!
M: Banana who?
P: Don't cry - it's just a joke!

I love my gay fish son.

Daddy: *looking over Paul's daily report from day care* So, you had fish sticks for lunch?
Paul: Yeah.
Mommy: Paul, do you like fish sticks? *giggling*
P: Yes.
D: *aside, to Mommy* Did you ask that on purpose?
M: *snickering* Yes! *more snickering*
D: Paul, where did you put the fish sticks?
P: In my mouth!
M: *shaking with laughter*

D: Paul, how many fish sticks could you fit in your mouth at one time?
P: One, two, three!

M: *uncontrollable laughter, to the point of tears* Oh, it hurts!
P: Mommy, do you need a hug?
M: Oh, sweetie, Mommy's laughing so hard it hurts her belly!
Joss: *looks on in concerned confusion*

For those reading who are terribly confused, please reference the brilliant "Do You Like Fish Sticks?" South Park episode:

Pass the Chap Stick, please!!

New Food: Pastina

Mommy made some Pastina (tina star pasta) with cottage cheese, one of her favorite comfort-foods, for lunch. Joss seemed to love it too. . .

Well, the pastina and cottage cheese, and banana/orange medly. . .

Ambidextrous Artist

Paul discovered that his magnet board is also a CHALK board! He's spent the last few days covered in yellow and white powder, leaving a trail of small fingerprints on every last surface. . .

While Paul is predominately a left-handed dude, he does exhibit some ambidextrous leanings, especially when drawing:

Time to clean up!

That's better!

All was wonderful, until Joss crawled over (Yes! Joss is crawling!! That milestone happened in Florida, and that series of postings is coming soon!) and began to suck on the yellow chalk. Visions of lead and melamine disguised as "non-toxic" sent Mommy running to relieve Joss of the chalk. Paul then tried to show Joss that one draws with it, rather than eats it, only so learn that wet chalk does not draw terribly well. . . *sigh*

Paul Speaks

Daddy: It's time for your bath!
Paul: Nooo! No! It not time for bath! It NOT time for bath!
Mommy: Well, what time is it, then?
::Paul thinks really hard about this::
Paul: It's fourteen o'clock. Time to play!

More Snow Fun

Apparently, the Boston area has had more snow so far this year than it's usual annual average. Woo-hoo! On Friday, Joss and Daddy went into school and work, respectively, so Mommy and Paul had a Mommy-Paul playdate!

Daddy shoveled the driveway before he left in the morning, but by 9:30am, there were another 4-5 inches of light, flaky powder. And the ice/sludge barrier at the end of the drive from the snowplows. Mommy and Paul decided to go out and clear the drive.

Even though it was still snowing.

Well, Mommy shoveled the snow. . .and Paul. . .

. . .Paul decided to eat all the snow.

Yummy!

Where's my shovel?

Ah, here it is!

Whew, there's a lot of snow out here. . .

Maybe I can eat the snowflakes before they hit the ground?

With the help of our neighbor (Thank you, Karen!), the driveway was cleared in reasonably quick order, and Paul waving to the snow plow drivers kept them from blocking us back in with ice/sludge. (Seriously - the guy swerved to miss the base of our drive way - thanks so much, Mr. Plow!)

Once Paul's face was completely encrusted with frozen snot, it was time to go inside and explore some opposites: Hot Chocolate and Snow Ice Cream!

Gather lots of CLEAN snow in a bowl.
In a separate bowl or cup, add a splash of vanilla, a tablespoon of sugar, and some milk (use chocolate milk for chocolate flavor!). Stir to mix well.
Add in heaping spoonfuls of snow until all is smooth and creamy.
Eat fast - it melts really quickly!

Mmmmm. . .hot chocolate.

Second big snow of the winter

The first big snow was Christmastime, but the second big snow happened January 9, 2011. This time, Paul was prepared with hat, mittens, scarf, boots, and car brush.

Hey Paul, come here!

Whoops - gotta work on your snow balance.

Hi Mommy! Paul enjoyed this snow storm much more than his first outing in the white stuff. . .

Well, time to get to work. This is why people have children, right? Get to shoveling!

Paul - you missed a spot on the hood!

Joss thought he'd just stay inside where there was the warm and the snacks.

Mommy build a bookcase?!?

Paul went down for a nap with the living room one way, and woke up to a fancy new storage system in place.

P: Mommy, what you do here?!?
M: I built a bookcase so we can organize your toys and books better.
P: Mommy build a bookcase?!?!?

He was enthralled watching me assemble the pre-fab furniture, putting his hand over mine when I used the screw driver, and banging with a toy hammer on the floor as I used a meat tenderizer (couldn't find the hammer, and the broad, flat surface worked just fine) to secure the back panel with brads.

Standing in the Pack 'N' Play!

Uh-oh - Mommy's in trouble now. . .

Look who is thrilled about standing up in his pack 'n' play?

Is this face of trouble?

You betcha!

Hahahaha!

Oh noes - fell down! Is this the Phantom Zone?

New Food: Banana Slices

When Paul didn't want the banana with a door in it,* Mommy sliced it up and put some in a bowl for Joss. And Joss dove on them like they were Wonka's last golden ticket. . .

Joss can pick the slices up. . .

. . .and eat them all by himself!

Argh! The one that got away!

Paul already knows his brother is bananas.

from Jan 3, 2011

*Paul does not like "dirty bananas," bananas with any bruising, or even any brown on the peel. He only wants "clean bananas." When he asked for a banana, and the only banana left had a very small bruise, Mommy thought she'd be clever and cut out the bruised part, and give the rest of the unblemished fruit to Paul. Paul asked about the cut-out part, and Mommy thought she'd be even more cleverer and say that it was a door, isn't that neat-o. Paul was not amused, and began to tantrum that he didn't want the banana with a door, that he only wanted a clean banana without a door. *sigh* Finally, after Mommy sliced the top "doored" half of the banana for Joss, Paul decided that he could eat the other "un-doored" half, and peace was once again restored in the kingdom.

Happy New Year!

Yeah, yeah, I'm a little late on the blog posting. It's not like I've been spending what little free time I have tending virtual crops on FarmVille. OK, I have. But I was thinking about the blog, so that counts a little, right? Well, onto the good stuff. . .

Happy New Year! We spent the last hours of 2010 with friends at Amy and Paul's "Kiddie" New Year's Eve party, which consisted of a swarm of the under 4 set, and everybody home by 8:30pm. Just our speed now-a-days.

It was fun talking/commiserating with other parents, and the boys loved playing with Emma and Jack's toys. . .

We were so inspired by the Cubeicals, I went out and bought some the next week.

It was Amy's Birthday (well, in two days), so we got to celebrate that, too. Paul was thrilled with the birthday cake!

Joss and Sophie had fun hanging out, as did Daddy and Sophie's mom, Kate.

These are the only pics we have from NYE 2011; the camera battery died. =(

2010 was a very tough year for us. It gave us our beautiful Joss, but also saw both boys in hospital, car trouble, work stresses, and a very long learning curve to this "parents of two children" thing. We're not terribly sorry to see 2010 end. Here's to a happy and healthy 2011!

Continental Drift

(Location: Backyard playing in the snow. Dad sees some rabbit tracks)

Dad: Paul, look at these tracks! What animal do you think played here?
Paul: I don't know, Daddy. What?
Dad: I've give you a clue: It jumps and has loooooooog ears.
Paul: (pauses to think). A kanga-roooooooooo!!!!!
